County News, September 10, 1990

Former NACo president Harvey Ruvin, commissioner, Dade County, Fla., represented America’s 3,000 counties at the United Nations during the first World Congress of Local Governments for a Sustainable Future Sept. 5-8. Local governments leaders from more than 30 nations gathered to hear and react tot the release of the United Nations Environmental Programme’s preliminary set of global targets for the reduction, reuse and recycling of solid waste.

The conference was also the launching pad for the creation of a new International Secretariat for Local Environmental Initiatives to implement local strategy.

Ruvin was appointed to represent the nation’s counties by NACo President Michael Stewart.
