Dade County Commissioner Harvey Ruvin told a United Nations conference Wednesday
that solving the world’s environmental problems begins at home – in cities and towns.
Ruvin was in New York to address a conference planning the first-ever environmental
sumit in Rio de Janeiro this June. The U.N. sponsored summit, expected to draw heads
of state from around the world, is supposed to produce a global plan to attack environmental
problems.
Ruvin, a former president of the National Association of Counties, was there to
make sure the summit planners kept local concerns in mind when they drew up the
summit’s agenda.
He told conference delegates that local governments are bearing the brunt of environmental
problems – and are at the forefront of environmental protection.
“Cities and local authorities are held ultimately responsible for the quality of
the environment.” Ruvin said. Ruvin stressed the growing interdependence of the
local and global ecology.
“nobody’s global environment, including Dade County’s can be considered healthy
until the global environment is healthy on a sustainable basis.” he said.
